Essential Oil Recipe for Hair Growth and Thickness

Recipe Categories - Other; Hair Care; Scientific Studies

Research shows this essential oil recipe for hair growth and thickness can significantly improve hair growth in people with alopecia (hair loss)

The study used a mixture of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedarwood to treat hair loss in people with alopecia areata (bald spots). 43 patients massaged the essential oil blend into their scalp for two minutes before bed for 7 months. Another 43 patients just used carrier oil. The group using the essential oils showed significantly more improvement than the group using the plain carrier oil.

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the oils in a dark glass bottle and mix well.

  2. Massage the oil into your scalp for 2 minutes each day.

  3. Leave the oil in your hair for at least 15 minutes then wash your hair with shampoo. If you prefer you can leave the oil in your hair overnight and shampoo in the morning.

The key to this treatment is persistence. Keep using the oils for at least 6 months. A lot of studies into hair loss treatments only show results after 3 – 6 months (this includes both natural treatments and pharmaceutical treatments) so don’t be surprised if it takes more than 3 months to see results.

If you want more science, another study compared Rosemary essential oil to minoxidil for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness, which can effect both men and women). Minoxidil is the most widely used treatment for hair loss and is the active ingredient in brands like Rogaine and Regaine.

50 participants used a 1% dilution solution of Rosemary oil while another 50 participants used a 2% minoxidil solution for six months. Both groups had a significant increase in hair count after 6 months but the group using Rosemary oil had less side effects. (The main side effect was itching.)

And for even more science, this study investigated the use of lavender essential oil on hair growth in mice. The lavender oil significantly increased the number of hair follicles, increased the depth of the hair follicles and thickened the dermal layer (the layer of skin that hair follicles are found in.)
