A
scientific study took a group of 28 dementia patients, including 17 patients with Alzheimer's disease, 3 with vascular dementia and 8 with other types of dementia. A combination of rosemary oil and lemon oil was diffused for 2 hours in the morning to improve memory and concentration. A combination of lavender oil and orange oil was diffused for an hour and a half in the evening to calm the nerves. The essential oil blends were diffused for a period of 28 days.
A significant improvement in the ability to form abstract ideas and cognitive function was seen in the group of patients who suffered mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. There was also some improvement in movement. No improvement was seen in the other symptoms that were studied.
It wasn't a miracle cure but it did show that aromatherapy could improve mental functioning in Alzheimer's patients and it's certainly worth trying if you have a loved one suffering from dementia.
