Keep mosquitoes, gnats and midges away with this easy essential oil bug spray recipe. I created this recipe by mixing together a few drops of every insect repelling essential oil I owned - it worked perfectly and smells good too! Includes recommended substitutions in case you don't have all of these oils.
| 4 drops Eucalyptus | |
| 4 drops Tea Tree | |
| 4 drops Peppermint | |
| 4 drops Lavender | |
| 4 drops Lemon Eucalyptus | |
| 4 drops Citronella | |
| 1/2 cup Distilled Water | |
| 3 tsp 160 proof or higher alcohol (OR 96 drops of Solubol) |
Add the essential oils and either the alcohol or the Solubol to a 4oz dark coloured glass spray bottle and shake well. This will dissolve the essential oils and prevent them from separating from the water.
Fill the bottle with distilled water leaving a bit of a gap at the top (use a bit less than half a cup of water). Screw the top on, shake well and spray. Shake the bottle before each use.
A combination of different essential oils works much better than any single oil for repelling insects. If you don't have some of the oils in the recipe, you can either leave them out and increase the number of drops of the oils you do have or substitute with any of the following: rosemary, thyme, cedarwood, lemongrass, cinnamon, basil, spearmint.
