Ingredients

8 drops Clove
7 drops Lemon
5 drops Cinnamon Bark
4 drops Eucalyptus
3 drops Rosemary
6 tbsp Grain Alcohol (180 proof or higher)
2 tbsp Aloe Vera Gel
10 drops Vitamin E Oil

Ingredients

Directions/Comments

Combine all of the ingredients in a glass bowl and mix well. Pour into small dark coloured squeeze bottles. Shake well before each use.

If you're wondering whether you can use a different type of alcohol - gin or vodka are both typically 40% alcohol content, which isn't a high enough alcohol content to meet WHO guidelines for hand sanitizers. Rubbing alcohol can have a very high alcohol content and is acceptable if it's 75% alcohol content or higher but it does tend to be very drying to the hands if you use it long term. I prefer high proof grain alcohol like Everclear as it's less drying than rubbing alcohol.

According to legend, the essential oil blend used in this recipe is based on a combination of aromatic herbs used by four 15th century French thieves to protect themselves from the plague while they were robbing the dead and dying.

Warnings - Clove oil is best avoided during pregancy. Clove oil is best avoided by babies and young children. Lemon oil can cause photosensitivity. If you use it on your skin, either use a steam distilled lemon oil (which doesn't cause photosensitivity) or dilute to 2% or less or avoid exposure to the sun or sunbeds for 12 hours. Cinnamon bark oil is best avoided during pregancy and while breastfeeding. Cinnamon bark oil is best avoided by babies and young children. Do not apply Eucalyptus Globulus or Eucalptus Radiata to, or near, the face of infants or young children. (Eucalyptus Dives is generally considered safe for children). Do not apply Rosemary oil on or near the face of infants or young children. Rosemary oil is best avoided during pregancy.
